Santa Claus was fired from his post at the Victoria Mall.

"The Santa was let go because (the mall) had multiple complaints that he was irritable and rude to guests," said Charles Russell, communications specialist for The Noerr Programs Corp., which provides digital event services to malls across the country.

A spokeswoman for the Victoria Mall declined to comment.

The man portraying Santa Claus, whose name was not released, was a new hire for the company and will not be returning, Russell said.

"Typically, when a person is terminated for un-Santa-like behavior, they would not be rehired," Russell said. "Noerr goes to great lengths to hire, train and supervise Santa to assure guests of a wonderful experience."

A new Santa is in place at Victoria Mall.

Russell said a state-to-state and a county-to-county background check is reviewed for all workers, which verifies whether the worker is a registered sex offender.

He declined to comment about whether a criminal background would hinder the hiring process.
