An 8-year-old boy died Thursday evening when his father accidentally ran over him with a pickup.

The accident occurred about 6:15 p.m. in a pasture on private property in the Hope Community in Lavaca County, said Sheriff Micah Harmon.

The child was taken by Yoakum Fire Department Emergency Medical Services to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, said Mark Herchek, fire chief and EMS director.

Victoria County Justice of the Peace Richard Castillo pronounced Brady Jacobs dead at 7:16 p.m.

Castillo performed an inquest and ordered an autopsy, which is standard procedure because of the victim's age, the judge said.

Preliminary autopsy reports from the Travis County Medical Examiner indicate that the boy died of accidental blunt force trauma, said Castillo.

Harmon said a witness statement indicated that the father, Jake Jacobs, and his four sons were on foot in the pasture, hunting.

They were watching a deer feeder from the brush. A deer appeared, and the father shot the deer, Harmon said, reading from the witness statement.

Three of the sons were standing with the deer, and the victim was sitting on the ground about 10 feet from them as the father arrived with the pickup.

The sun had already set, and it was dark at this time. When the father arrived in the pickup, he turned the wheels to the left, going forward, to get close to the deer.

The pickup ran over the victim because the father could not see him sitting in the grass in the dark, Harmon said, still reading from the witness statement.

"It appears that this was just a horribly tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this tragic time," Harmon said.
