Alfred Mata is hoping people choose to "ride the elevator home" this New Year's Eve.

Mata, the director of sales at the Hilton Garden Inn, and his team recently began planning a party, encouraging guests to stay the night and off the streets.

"The police department plays a big role in that, but we can all do our part. This is just a safe way for people to have a good time," Mata said.

Already, 160 people have chosen to ring in the New Year under the 6-month-old hotel's roof.

Workers were busy Monday transforming the 4,000-square-foot La Salle ballroom, setting up chairs, tables and the dance floor.

Karen Beller, of La Mirage Weddings and Events, gathered supplies for the black and silver centerpieces, while David Ramos from A Plus Party Rentals was retrieving a drape to section off the VIP section.

"We usually set up everything the day before because of how busy this space is," Mata said.

The ballroom has the capacity for 220 guests. Only a portion of the hotel's 118 rooms have been set aside for partygoers should they want them, but there's no guarantee the rooms won't already be booked that night, he said.

"The best deal (for the party) is the room package. Starting at $129, it includes a room, two tickets to the event, breakfast for two in the morning, and, of course, the champagne toast at midnight," Mata said.

Advance tickets without a room cost $30, while purchasing tickets at the door costs $40.

Disc jockey Flashback, DJ enCore and DJ Blaze, all local acts, will spin throughout the night.

"We told the DJs to play off the crowd. If they see more people loving the 80s music, stick to the 80s music. We gave them free rein," Mata said.

Chef Philip Torres and four others in the kitchen will prepare hors d'oeuvre, or large finger foods, not usually available at the hotel's restaurant.

"Of course, you'll have your regular stuff like mozzarella sticks," Mata said. "He (Torres) wants to surprise us."

About 300 balloons will drop from the ceiling at midnight. Prizes, such as a three-night hotel stay with a dinner for two, will be inside at least three balloons.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the party ends at 2 a.m.

Two off-duty police officers will also be in attendance until 3 a.m.
