As I travel across our "612 Square Miles of Excellence," I continually encounter student success and achievement at every stop. It is these accomplishments that serve as a validation of our focus on "Every Child, Every Classroom, Every Day." We have much to celebrate in the VISD this week, and we are extremely proud to showcase this myriad of educational achievements.
First, we would like to congratulate all of our elementary and middle school students who participated in our campuswide spelling bee contests. Everyone was thoroughly impressed with the level of student talent, and we would like to acknowledge all of our teachers, judges and volunteers who made these events so special.
Congratulations to the Victoria East High School Cross Examination Debate Team on winning the University Interscholastic League District Debate Team Championship. We are extremely proud of this feat and would like to recognize East High School students Micah McHenry and Teresa Wang on their first-place finish. Congratulations also to our Victoria East High School girls basketball team and our Victoria East High School boys swim and dive team on their recent district championships. Please join me in extending our gratitude to our coaches, sponsors and students for representing our community and school district with such high standards of excellence.
On Feb. 7, I had the privilege of attending the "We Got Style" VISD fifth-grade Honor Choir concert. It was a magical evening layered with top-notch performances by our students across all of our elementary schools. We would like to thank Pastor John Woods for his services as our conductor and all of our outstanding elementary music teachers and volunteers who created such magical moments for our students.
This week is also designated as National School Counselor Week. We would like to extend a special "thank you" to all of our outstanding counselors who serve as "change agents" and "difference makers" in the lives of our students. Our counselors have a tremendous impact on student success, student achievement and student well-being. We are extremely proud and honored to be surrounded by such dedicated and committed educators. Abraham Lincoln once stated, "In the end, it is not the years in your life that count. It is the life in your years." We may never remember what someone says or does, but we will never forget how they make us feel. Please join me in extending our sincere appreciation to all of our counselors for a job well done.
