West's Draper finishes fifth in diving at state meet

AUSTIN - Victoria West's Mallory Draper moved up a spot and finished fifth in the girls one-meter diving competition at the UIL Class 4A Swimming & Diving State Meet on Saturday at the Jamail Texas Swim Center.

Draper, a junior, was in sixth place after Friday's preliminary round, but completed her 11 dives with a score of 396.60, which gave her a comfortable margin over Ashleigh Dehls of Frisco, who finished sixth with 375.50 points.

Zoe Alaniz of Corpus Christi Ray won the event with a total of 493.80 points.

Draper was making her third consecutive appearance at the state meet. She finished eighth as a freshman and seventh as a sophomore.

The four divers who finished ahead of Draper are seniors.

El Campo's Kari Wilkins finished ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle.

Wilkins, a junior, had a time of 1:06.75 in Saturday's 100 breaststroke consolation final after swimming a 1:07.57 in Friday's preliminaries.

Wilkins had a time of 54.32 in the final of the 100 freestyle.

Wilkins scored 16 points for El Campo, and Draper scored 14 for West.
