The Victoria Business and Education Coalition is honoring mentors who donate their time to work with students in Victoria schools.

This week's spotlight mentor is Janie Delgado, an independent mentor of one student at Hopkins Academy.

How long have you been a mentor for the district?

Five years.

What made you decide to be a mentor?

My grandchildren were struggling in their elementary schools, and they received help in their subjects. I wanted to help other kids with their studies.

What do you feel you bring to the student?

I feel I bring one-on-one attention in their subject. I try to raise their self esteem and try to help them improve, making them excel.

What do you enjoy most about mentoring?

I enjoy seeing how they mastered a word and going from one level of reading to a higher level. It is very satisfying.

What have you learned from the student, educational system, etc. that has enlightened you?

I have learned that some children have a disability that can be brought to the surface and that all children can learn.
