Part of a nuclear power plant in Matagorda County was shut down Tuesday when a main transformer caught fire about 4:40 p.m.

"The good news is no one was injured," said South Texas Project spokesman Buddy Eller. "All of our safety systems operated as designed, and that is the most important thing."

The fire, in Unit 2 of STP Generating Station near Bay City, was declared an "unusual event," the lowest level of emergency classification, according to a company news release.

There were no hazardous conditions to the public or plant personnel, Eller said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and Unit 2 will be closed until a new transformer is installed.

Unit 1 of the plant is operating at 100 percent power, and none of the two million Texas homes serviced by STP have experienced electricity shortages because of the closure, Eller said.
