One person was killed and four others seriously injured Saturday in a three-vehicle crash on a rural road in DeWitt County, according to Department of Public Safety troopers at the scene.

The extent of injuries are not clear. Troopers at the scene are still investigating the crash site and trying to clear the road, which has been closed for most of the afternoon. Officials are expected to keep it blocked until about 8 p.m.

No names of those involved have been released.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 237 about five miles east of Yorktown. At least one of the vehicles involved was a tractor-trailer.

Nearby resident Richard Rodriguez was one of the first people at the scene.

"I was getting ready to feed the cows, and then I heard an explosion," Rodriguez said.

When Rodriguez got to the crash, he saw a victim lying on the ground and asked a woman hovering over the victim whether he was OK.

The woman told Rodriguez that the victim was OK, but "we are no doctors."
