"Walk Across Texas" promotes healthier living

Exercising can be a struggle, but walking is something that can be done by most.

That's what Stacy Cis believes. As area coordinator for "Walk Across Texas," an eight-week program designed for people to stay physically active, she hopes to encourage individuals to get healthy.

"By being physically active, it lessens their risk of having chronic disease," Cis said.

This weekend, Cis and others signed up people to participate in the program to help start people off the new year healthy.

"January is the perfect time to fulfill activities," said DeAnna Alvarez, program manager at Texas Area Health Education Center-Victoria. "Hopefully after eight weeks, this will be a routine."

The program will consist of walking a total of 830 miles during the eight weeks. Cis explained that people will be able to complete the miles by walking about 13 miles a day.

Time spent walking, Cis said, can be done locally by going to the park or going on a hike.
