Victoria County Commissioners opened up the application process Tuesday to fill the soon-to-be vacant judge's seat in County Court at Law No. 1.
County Judge Don Pozzi said Judge Laura Weiser, who is retiring Feb. 28, has done "an outstanding job" and "will be very difficult to replace."
Weiser wrote in her resignation letter that she is accepting an opportunity with the Texas Center for the Judiciary in Austin as a judicial liaison. She has served as judge since 1990.
Applications will be accepted in person at the county administration department through noon Feb. 1. The appointment, who must have practiced law for four years to be eligible, will complete her term, which ends Dec. 31, 2014.
Pozzi said his goal is to appoint a new judge before the bench is vacated because of the workload - including the misdemeanor, probate and juvenile programs.
He appointed a committee that includes Administrative Services Director Joyce Dean, Commissioner Clint Ives, County Court at Law No. 2 Judge Daniel Gilliam, retired Judge Pat Kelly and Attorney Kevin Cullen.
Pozzi said he did not wish to be on the committee.
"I have some close relationships with families of the applicants, so I am taking myself out of the process," he said.
Commissioner Gary Burns suggested including law enforcement or a representative from the District Attorney's office. However, Pozzi said that could cause conflicts down the road.
Pozzi said he is aware of one member of the criminal district attorney's office who is planning to apply for the opening.
In all, he is expecting a large response from applicants.
