Editor, the Advocate:
In his letter Jan. 13, a writer "was compelled to write" about his indoctrination of some young adults with regard to labor unions. Were they appalled and disgruntled about the union violence in Wisconsin and Michigan last year? Did you tell them violence is the hallmark of union regimens and that during World War II, the West Coast Longshoremen's Union was a Communist organization headed up by Harry Bridges? And what about the Teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa - then back to the 30s and the United Mine Workers and John L. Lewis? Because of their working conditions, the mine workers had plenty of reasons to protest, but today, you have OSHA overseeing working environment/conditions. And today, due to competition for scarce skilled workers, businesses are paying high wages and benefits, so there's no reason to protest except to gouge consumers. The demands for exorbitant wages/benefits drives up the price of consumer products out of the reach of poorer people. And in the public service unions, the high wages and pensions are bankrupting cities all over the nation - especially in California. These people are the 20 percent of the workforce the writer refers to - in industry, the number is down to 11 percent from a high of 28 percent years ago. As indicated in Wisconsin and Michigan, the citizens are awakening.
The writer said, "If you are making a decent salary in a nonunion company, you owe it to the union." Sounds like Obama and his "If you're successful in the world, somebody else did it for you." He also states that "Corporations don't give out money out of the goodness of their hearts," indicating it has to be coerced from them. Like robbing a bank? Corporations are owned by stockholders like those young adults you are trying to reprogram and their parents, and you have no right to dictate to them. For nonproducing deadbeats the company would like to terminate, but the union won't let them - that's real job security.
