Port Lavaca police are investigating the death of a 27-year-old man, who was found Sunday in 2 to 3 feet of water at Bayfront Peninsula Park.
Detective Colin Rangnow said nothing was on the body of the victim, Diego Carrizales Martinez, of Port Lavaca, to suggest foul play. Martinez may have been in the water for two to four hours before a resident discovered him at 8 a.m., Rangnow said. Port Lavaca firefighters retrieved the body.
"It's possible his body could have drifted from a different area as the tide was coming in this morning," Rangnow said.
The cause of death was not immediately known. Martinez's body will be sent to the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office, where an autopsy will be conducted.
Rangnow said he's working to track down Martinez's last known whereabouts.
"Where was he? Who was he with? Did he have too much to drink and fall in the water, or is there more to the story?" Rangnow said.
Rangnow, who has been with the department for five years, remembered only two people who had been found dead in nearby water channels. Both of those people, he said, fell into the water after having a heart attack.
