Straight Teeth Talk: Dentists need dentistry, too

A few years ago, I gave my team a fun gift; each of us had a consultation with a famous plastic surgeon in Houston. When it came to my turn, I noticed that the surgeon had the same wrinkles as I did.

I wondered to myself why he didn't practice his own trade. Of course, if I would have asked, his reply would likely be that he couldn't work on himself, and he didn't trust anyone else.

Because I deeply believe in the benefits of modern dentistry, I had a cosmetic makeover years ago. At that time, not much was known about the bite. End result was that I had nice teeth, but my bite was still bad and kept giving me problems, especially in the ears and jaw joints.

My good friend, Dr. Brad Durham, of Savannah, Ga., is the world's expert in giving people beautiful teeth that fit a good bite. He is Paula Dean's dentist and has introduced her to me in the past. If you do a Google Search for Paula Deen's dentist, you can see her testimony. He didn't say much about her latest controversy, so I didn't ask.

Because Brad teaches other dentists clinical dentistry and I teach communication, teamwork, etc., we did a trade out, and I spent two weeks in his office with his team, and he reworked my teeth and bite. What a great learning experience for both of us. Plus, I got new, beautiful teeth to the right bite.

Importance of bite

It is obvious that my new teeth are younger looking in shape, size and color. What is not as noticeable is the difference in the lower teeth. If you look closely, you will see that the new ones are taller which is more natural and more symmetrical.

That tiny amount of difference is huge for people with headaches, jaw joint and ear problems. It helps free up the jaw, creating less pressure on the ears and the muscles of the head and neck.

Dr. Mac Lee practices in Edna. He is a international speaker to dentists and is an adviser to Dr. Mehmet Oz. To learn more, visit or call 361-782-7191.
