Midday Mafia: Fourth of July is day to be patriotic

July 10, 2013 at 2:10 a.m.

Editor's note: The Midday Mafia is made up of five locals who wish to remain anonymous at the moment. Names have been changed to protect the guilty and are as follows: The Don, Two Taps, Walnuts, Jack the Knife and Jimmy Three Cheese. The Midday Mafia will run every other Thursday in Get Out.

The infamous mob of biased reviewers had an off week last week. Being proud Americans, we enveloped ourselves in family, friends and homemade ice cream. Several of us were off at baseball tournaments - as American an event as can come along.

Every member of the Mafia played sports at various high levels, and each of us has coached our own kids and those of numerous others for years. There is a bond among us that is bigger than ourselves, and it expresses itself through our love of athletics and athletes.

That said, we are all uniquely American and proud of this great nation. The ability to hit the pool, enjoy our families, cook outside, sip a cold beer or lemonade and enjoy the freedoms afforded us by generations of American soldiers is priceless. There is no way a mere restaurant review column can ever provide a forum to express the pride we feel in this country, state and town.

The little experiment of a republic based on a democracy is now 237 years old, young by nations' standards, but very few can claim to have accomplished more in such a short period of time. Every time you see a World War II veteran, thank him for his service; more and more die every day, and soon all will be gone.

Embrace our Vietnam veterans and let them know we get it now. What a tragedy that many of these young men weren't welcomed back home by their own.

The tragedies continue, as our current troops are losing limbs and being hurt every day.

We realize the Fourth of July is about the U.S. declaring its independence, but we also know freedom isn't free. If you see a soldier in a restaurant, pick up his or her check and tell him thanks.

Vote and require accountability of your leaders. Love your neighbor as yourself and until next time, fuhget about it.
