The Lady Titans' softball program will have a new head coach in 2014.

Bethany King, a former head coach at Bloomington and an assistant last year at Victoria East, was named the new head softball coach at East.

"It's a big wave of excitement," King said. "I was hoping for this all summer, and now, it's finally happened."

"She rose to the top of the list," VISD athletic coordinator Ralph Escalona said. "We felt she was the best fit for our program and has a great knowledge of the game."

King, a native of Gonzales, played college softball at Temple Junior College and McNeese State. After a stint as a graduate assistant at McNeese, King served as Bloomington's head softball coach for two seasons.

She joined the Lady Titans' coaching staff before the start of last season. King said the relationship she has already built with the East players will be beneficial toward a successful season.

"They know me and know what I will expect," King said. "They've seen the work ethic and what I've accomplished by working hard. I'm glad to be able to show them that.

"We're going to have a very competitive team," King added. "We'll have a different look, a different attitude and come ready to work hard."
