Two men escaped serious injury Thursday afternoon after a fire ignited the front porch of their home and then spread to the structure.

Victoria Fire Department firefighters responded to the blaze about 3:45 p.m. in the 600 block of Berwick Road.

Fire Chief Taner Drake said when firefighters arrived, more than half the house was covered in flames.

Three people live at the house, but only two were home at the time of the blaze.

Christopher Stroh, 53, owns the home and said he was lying down inside when his roommate rushed in to tell him that a couch on the porch was on fire.

The roommate called 911, and Stroh tried to use buckets of water to douse the blaze, which grew quickly.

Drake said the roof collapsed during the fire and that no serious injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Witnesses at the scene said the couch on the porch was near a dryer vent, but it is not clear whether the dryer was operating.

The American Red Cross is assisting the residents.
