To Crossroads communities for keeping our nation's 237th birthday celebrations safe and entertaining for everyone.

To the city of Victoria for investing in the entrance parking area of the 2.1-mile Lone Tree Creek Hike and Bike Trail.

To Gregory McCarthy, a member of Boy Scout Troop 363, for leading an effort to remove chinaberry trees, an invasive species, at Coleto Creek Park. McCarthy, 14, is a freshman at Victoria East High School.

To all the competitors in the Miss Victoria 2013 pageant whose young lives are dedicated to community service.

To Victoria Preservation Inc. and the Victoria County heritage Department and other preservationists for their efforts to save the Zahn house at 107 DeLeon St.

To recent rain in the region, but we still need more to climb out of the continuing drought.

To all the Little League players, parents and fans for their dedication to this great slice of American tradition.

To Sharon Petty for teaching people how to dance.

To Martin Garcia, of Victoria, who administered CPR to an injured Chihuahua after it was struck by a vehicle. He also spent about $280 in veterinary bills to save the animal.

To the family and friends of Jessica Villarreal who graciously allowed the community to be inspired by Jessica's beautiful life. Her spirit, bravery and thirst for life are her legacies. We were all blessed to learn from her perseverance.


To the insensitive vandals who desecrated the Victoria Islamic Center with a hate message.
