Having a (soft)ball

July 16, 2013 at 2:16 a.m.

Coach Mark West instructs Gabby Gonzales to run the second base in case of a hit ball during a VGSA kids softball game at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.

Emily Parsons stepped up to the plate with a softball bat more than half her size.

That didn't stop her from hitting the big yellow softball down the third baseline and running to first base for a base hit.

The Victoria Girls Softball Association girls teams that were 10-and-younger played their final games of the season in May.

"For some teams, if they win, it may mean they will be in first place," said VGSA Vice President Mike Craft.

Craft noted that winning isn't all the girls care about when they step out onto the field.

"They really enjoy being out here. It's a great opportunity for them to learn the fundamentals while having fun at the same time," said Craft.

Whether the team places first or not, each girl will walk away with a medal and the fundamentals to play softball next season.
