Reagan McAda's high school baseball season is over, and he's enjoying fishing in Alaska.

Few, though, have forgotten how great a season the Hallettsville pitcher had, as he was picked as the Class 2A player of the year by the Texas Sports Writers Association.

Overall, Hallettsville did well for itself on the all-state team. Three seniors - Will Wallace, Carson Schindler and Chris Jones - were selected to the first team selections Class 2A state baseball team. One was selected to the third team. Jones also earned honorable mention as a pitcher.

The Brahmas defeated Hughes Springs in June at Dell Diamond to win their third state baseball championship.

McAda pitched 81 innings and had 101 strikeouts to help the Brahmas (35-3) win their first state title since 1997. McAda was also honorable mention at second base.

"It's still unbelievable to go out as the top dog," said McAda, speaking from Soldotna, on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska near Anchorage. "We worked our tails off all four years. All the hard work paid off."

McAda, who will attend Texas A&M in the fall, was also selected as MVP of the 2013 Victoria Advocate all-area baseball team. Hallettsville coach Shorty Cook took home coach of the year award. He credited the players with making the award possible.

"That honor goes back to our kids," Cook said. "The honor that I received is a reflection of them. Every year as a coach, when you get going, that's what you want to do."

Refugio's Travis Quintanilla capped off a 12-1 season by earning second team honor. As a junior, he struck out 141 batters and earned first-team all-area honors this year. He was also honorable mention at shortstop.

Hallettsville landed one other on the all-state team in sophomore Nate Kowalik, who earned third team honors. Schulenburg's Hayden Besetzny joined him on the third team.

Cook, the Hallettsville coach, said he was not surprised that McAda took home the player of the year award, especially given the amount of work he did on all aspects of the game this season.

"Going all the way this year, the bigger the stage, the bigger he performs," Cook said. "With hard work, respecting the game and having goals, anything is possible.

"That's what we'll reflect on what Reagan brought to the program. I know he will be appreciative of the award."

Also earning honorable mention from the Crossroads is John Wesley Shipp and Tyler Castellano from Refugio, and Ross Bludau from Schulenburg.
