One man died after a boat capsized near Bird Island in Matagorda Bay on Saturday.
Daye Bibbs Jr., 53, of Kyle, was thrown from an 18-foot Bay Quest when the boat capsized because of large waves, Calhoun County Justice of the Peace Precinct 5 Nancy J. Pomykal said Sunday.
The Coast Guard station in Port O'Connor received a call at 3:33 p.m. that the boat had capsized with four people on board, said Lt. Tyrone Conner, public affairs officer of the Corpus Christi Coast Guard.
Pomykal said all four men had life jackets, but they were holding them and not wearing the life jackets. They floated for about 15 minutes before others saw them in the water.
The caller recovered Bibbs, who was unconscious, and the other three people who were thrown from the vessel and took them to a fishing center to meet emergency personnel, Conner said.
At 3:43 p.m., the Coast Guard at Port O'Connor launched a 24-foot search and rescue vessel to meet the caller, and two crewmen took over CPR until EMS arrived.
Bibbs was pronounced dead at 4:11 p.m. An autopsy was ordered from the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office, Pomykal said.
The Coast Guard recommends boaters maintain safety awareness when operating watercraft and always wear a life jacket when out on the water.
