Dan Easton, publisher of the Victoria Advocate, has accepted chairmanship of the 2013 Victoria County United Way Community Campaign, according to a news release from the United Way.

"Dan has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations and brings the passion, commitment and leadership needed to lead a successful campaign in challenging times," said Jennifer Yancey, chairwoman of the United Way board of directors.

Easton joins a long list of distinguished community leaders who have led the United Way campaign over the years, according to the news release.

Easton represents the third generation of ownership at the Victoria Advocate.

Before his role at the Advocate, Easton was vice president of operations for Inquisite, an Austin-based software startup.

Easton is a native Texan - born in Houston, raised in South Texas - and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1995.

He has been married to Camille for 15 years and has two children - James, 13, and Elaine, 10.

In accepting the leadership role, Easton said, "I want families in our community to have the things we want for our own families: good jobs with good wages, safe and affordable housing, success for our children and financial stability.

"Our economy is on the upswing, new businesses have moved into our community, and people want to be part of the solution to make Victoria, DeWitt and Lavaca counties a better place to live."

He added the campaign is about like-minded people standing shoulder to shoulder with their neighbors to do something positive and be part of the answer.

Easton said the goals of the 2013 campaign are simple: to reach out to every person and company in the community to help children realize their potential, develop strong families and safe neighborhoods, help seniors sustain their independence and support those who are rebuilding their lives.

"We will do what Victorians have always done, demonstrate our strength of generous giving of our time, talents and gifts."

The Victoria County United Way 2013 campaign kicks off with its annual Day of Caring on Sept. 12.
