An Austwell man died in a house fire about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Austwell Fire Chief Rick Loughman said Sunday.

Lupe Martinez, 84, the father of Austwell Assistant Fire Chief, Ismael Martinez, was pronounced dead by Refugio precinct 1 Judge Lorraine Lopez at the scene, a single-family home on Main Street.

Loughman said Refugio, Tivoli and Austwell fire departments responded to the fire, and extinguished the flames about 3 a.m.

More than 18 volunteer firefighters were on scene, and at least two remained on scene until 11 a.m. Sunday.

The home is a total loss, and Loughman said the Martinez family will temporarily be staying in a donated recreational vehicle until they can find a permanent residence.

Donations for money and clothing are needed for the family, Loughman said.
