An upcoming safety improvement plan will soon close the U.S. Highway 59 crossover near Hungerford.

The Texas Department of Transportation on Friday announced plans to remove the crossover adjacent to Hungerford's truck weigh station. Agency representatives said the removal begins Monday and should take about three days.

Following verbal discussions, the transportation department sent certified letters to adjacent landowners, county officials and the Department of Public Safety notifying them of the upcoming, permanent traffic change.

The nearby U.S. Highway 59/Farm-to-Market Road 1161 overpass provides motorists with another safe travel option in the area that allows access to northbound U.S. Highway 59 when necessary.

Initially, traffic barricades will block the crossover. Permanent removal will begin shortly thereafter.

Portable message signs will alert motorists of the closure. Highway cable barrier, used to keep vehicles from traveling through medians, will be connected in the area to extend the continuum of safety there.
