I am writing to applaud the article written by Jennifer Preyss concerning traditional medicine and faith. This subject has long been a difficult issue, and it is so very important to get out the word that major depression and other mental health challenges are not due to a lack of faith but are truly an illness. Our faith can certainly play a positive part in recovery, but getting help from a professional is not a sign of a lack of faith. I was very disappointed to see studies in the recent past that showed that many pastors still do not believe that these are real illnesses that need professional and medical interventions.
Great job bringing this to light, Jennifer. Also, I was so proud of the young woman who was willing to come forward and talk about her experiences with faith and depression. Many of us who work as counselors and therapists feel called to do this job to help others. I hope this will just be the beginning of a much needed discussion.
