A 6-inch water main broke Tuesday morning, leaving nearby homes and businesses without water.

The water was turned off about 10:30 a.m. so workers could fix the leak in the 700 to 900 blocks of Fillmore Avenue, said Victoria spokesman O.C. Garza.

Repairs were completed and water service restored about 4:30 p.m.

Jimmy Roach, deputy director of Victoria Public Works, said the break affected water service to a nearby laundromat and apartment complex.

High temperatures and dry soil are a perfect combination for water main breaks, especially for older cast iron pipes, he said.

The city will absorb the cost of the leaked water. The break will be reported as standard practice to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
