Patrons waited in lines that stretched back to the entrance doors and sometimes beyond at the grand opening of the new Golden Corral on Saturday.

Mary Stockton, of Victoria, dined on the opening day of the new Golden Corral with her husband and sister. She enjoyed a selection of fish and shrimp, which she described as tasty and fresh.

Despite the wait, Stockton said the homemade bread rolls were still warm. She also appreciated the six flavors of hand-dipped ice cream added to the yogurt normally offered.

Mike and Cyndi Berger, of Goliad, relaxed in a booth after their meal. Cyndi said the fried okra is better than it was at the original restaurant

"You could tell the mashed potatoes were real," Cyndi said. "Not from a box."

She sampled two cobblers and blueberry pie for dessert, which she described as excellent.

Mike liked his meatloaf but was disappointed he did not get to try the pot roast.

"It was going so fast that it was gone every time I got there," he said.

The new 11,000-square-foot restaurant is near the intersection of Sam Houston Drive and Navarro Street.
