The closing day to file for public office in Victoria brought another candidate to the already competitive mayoral race.

Omar Rachid, 52, submitted his application for mayor Friday, making him the fifth candidate for that office.

Rachid, a self-employed business consultant, said the high office has been on his mind for quite some time.

"I'm very passionate about Victoria," Rachid said. "I'm willing to serve, and I felt that this is the right time and opportunity for me to step up to the plate and serve my community."

Rachid has been a Victoria resident for 19 years, serving in many leadership capacities with the Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross, United Way, Adult Literacy Council, Theatre Victoria and Victoria Rotary Club.

"I believe I have the skill set and the leadership qualities the office deserves," Rachid said.

He said his focus will be on the salary for the city's first responders, as well as infrastructure maintenance and repair.

"Nobody actually talked me into it, but I did solicit some feedback from close friends," Rachid said. "I received lots of encouragement, and they believe that I would definitely do a good job. That's why I filed."
