Government needs to live within its means

Editor, the Advocate:

A good letter was recently written by Mr. Erwin, of Shiner. The federal government needs to tighten it's belt, just like us common folks do, when faced with financial difficulty. Shame on Barrack Obama for using our military, policemen, firefighters, school children, etc., as his personal political props to make a case for higher taxation to support more government overspending. A 2 percent reduction in the increase of spending is not going to cause planes to fall from the sky, schools to close or our military to dissolve. That's just what Obama wants the uninformed public to believe so that they will rally behind him. What needs to happen is for our federal government to live within it's means the same way us citizens do and stop taking more of our money to support handouts, bailouts, cop-outs, funding for morally offensive causes and the list goes on. This is just another step in what appears to be a plan to increase government control over people. In reality, and by constitutional design, the people should be more in control of the government. It is not the role of government to take care of people who should be taking care of themselves. Unfortunately, we now have a society seemingly more concerned about what handouts the government is willing to extend in exchange for votes. The role of government in our lives is infringing on personal freedoms, and it is amazing and disturbing that more than half of the country seems to be OK with that.
