The Victoria County treasurer crossed political lines Monday, switching from the Democratic to the Republican party.
Sean Kennedy, who is on his second term as treasurer since the 2006 election, formally announced Monday his intention to change parties in a letter to the area Republican chairman.
"I've always been a fiscal conservative, and like many businessmen in South Texas, I grew up as a conservative Democrat," Kennedy, 56, said in a news release.
Kennedy said in the news release that the Democratic Party has drifted from the values he holds dear.
Before becoming treasurer, Kennedy worked in the county auditor's office for two years and then served for six years as an accountant for the Victoria City-County Health Department. Before entering public service, he was in the private sector for more than 20 years.
In a news release, Republican Chairman Michael Cloud said the party was encouraged that Kennedy decided his values were aligned with those promoted by Republicans.
