I have noticed quite a bit of progress made on the new University of Houston-Victoria residence hall on Houston Highway. How long until it is complete, and who will be living there?
Significant progress has been made on the construction of Jaguar Suites, the first newly constructed UHV residence hall. The apartment-style dorm, located at 2703 Houston Highway, will be home to 216 sophomores in the fall semester of 2013.
The $11.5-million, 82,000-square-foot dormitory will have 54 suites, a fitness center, swimming pool, computer labs, study rooms and a large multipurpose room.
Construction is on schedule, and the substantial completion date is projected to be July 5. All aspects of the residence hall should be ready for the start of the new school year.
Brenda Svetlik, UHV director of capital projects and purchasing, said the weather hasn't been detrimental to construction progress.
"We had a few windy and rainy days slow us down, but we are still on schedule," she said.
Svetlik said she is pleased with the quality of work completed. The UH Facilities Planning and Construction Department is overseeing the project. Vaughn Construction is the general contractor, and Smith and Co. Architects designed the residence hall.
Combined with the existing UHV residence halls - Jaguar Hall and Jaguar Court - there will be nearly 640 beds for students once Jaguar Suites is open. The new dorm is between the university's two existing residence halls.
Each of the suites will house four students and will have four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a shared living area and kitchenette. The suites will be furnished, including a flat screen TV with free cable and Wi-Fi.
Groundbreaking for Jaguar Suites took place Aug. 30 as part of UHV's 40th anniversary kickoff. A special section about the university's past 40 years was inserted in the March 3 Victoria Advocate. A website about the university's history will soon launch.
Existing UHV freshmen can sign a lease to live in Jaguar Suites. New freshmen can apply for a lease at Jaguar Hall and then plan to move into Jaguar Suites in fall 2014. For more information about housing, call 361-485-4404.
