Meet DeWitt County spelling co-champions

Twelve spellers from around the Crossroads will duke it out at the 2013 Regional Spelling Bee Championship.

Each day, we'll feature the co-champions from participating counties.

Today's co-champions are from DeWitt County - Lillianna Gonzalez, of Cuero Junior High School, and Brady Watson, of Cuero Intermediate School.

Name: Lillianna Gonzalez

Grade: 7th grade

Age: 13 years old

School: Cuero Junior High School

Past victories: Cuero Intermediate School 2012 winner

Hobbies: Adding new shapes and sizes to her rock collection

Other achievements: First-place winner in UIL Spelling for the last six consecutive years, has made 100s on every spelling test she's ever taken.

Q: What was your winning word?

A: Windily

Q: If you win, what do you plan on doing in DC?

A: I guess visiting some of the museums, especially the Holocaust Museum; that's the one we want to see. My mom is like my coach, so she'll be the one going with me.

Q: How do you practice for the spelling bee?

A: My mom made flashcards with all of the words in the spelling bee with the language of origin and pronunciation. We test each other.

Name: Brady Watson

Grade: 5th grade

Age: 10 years old

School: Cuero Intermediate School

Past victories: School and county Bee winner 2011-12, placed sixth at the regional competition that same year; school and county bee winner 2012-13

Hobbies: Playing soccer, basketball and the piano. Singing in the church choir. Playing video games on the Wii U.

Other achievements: UIL Number Sense - first place in first grade and fourth grade, second place in second grade and third grade; currently Student Council Vice President at CIS and on the A Honor Roll.
