The 24th annual Regional Spelling Bee will bring 12 anxious contestants to the stage for a chance to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The Corpus Christi Caller Times held the Regional Spelling Bee before the Regional III Education Service Center and the Victoria Advocate took over the sponsorship in 1989.

The Victoria Advocate will provide an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the winner of Tuesday's competition.

"One parent goes with them to D.C.," said Region III curriculum and instruction component secretary Cathy McCormick. "It's a really great opportunity."

Houston Public Broadcasting Spelling Bee announcer Joseph Barbara will be reading the words to contestants from Victoria College's Johnson Symposium stage for the first time in the regional bee's history.

Nan Gainer, who has been with the bee since it started, will return as the competition's facilitator.

This year's Regional Spelling Bee judges are Latrice Youngblood, Gabriel Soliz and Camille Easton.
