Traffic was backed up in Port Lavaca and Point Comfort for more than an hour Monday morning following a five-vehicle wreck on the causeway, state Highway 35.

"Traffic was backed up all the way to Virginia Street in Port Lavaca," said Calhoun County Sheriff George Aleman.

The wreck happened about 6:35 a.m. in the outside lane of traffic traveling north.

"There was a lot of traffic congestion this morning, and when one car braked suddenly and was hit from behind, it started a chain reaction," said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Wesley Rodriguez. "We had to shut traffic down on both sides."

Two people were taken by Calhoun County Emergency Medical Services to Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca.

"The injuries were minor," said Rodriguez. "They were transported more as a precautionary measure."

The roads were re-opened to traffic about 8 a.m.
