Formosa fire calls to mind 2005 incident

May 2, 2013 at 12:02 a.m.

Oct 6, 2005 A late afternoon explosion at the Formasa Plastics Point Comfort plant near Port Lavca TX, sent plumes of smoke and flames high into the air. Several flare off pipes were burning off residual material, however a large fire was burning below the lower layers of smoke, Thursday Oct 6, 2005. Aerial photos were taken at 2500' approx. 4 miles away from the plant from the north, looking South East.

This is the second time in the past eight years that this specific plant has experienced problems of this kind.

According to a report from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, the Point Comfort plant had an explosion on Oct. 6, 2005, when a forklift towing a trailer loaded with cylinders of breathing air used in maintenance snagged an unguarded valve, resulting in the release of a large volume of propylene, which ignited and caused a large fire.

Two workers were burned, one seriously, and 14 others suffered minor injuries.
