Cal State San Marcos claims tournament title in 3-2 victory over LSU-Alexandria

Steve Messner and Justin Hertzmann combined on a two-hitter to lead Cal State San Marcos to a 3-2 win over LSU-Alexandria in the championship game of the Association of Independent Institutions baseball tournament Friday at Riverside Stadium.

Messner yielded two hits in six innings, and Hertzmann pitched three hitless innings as the top-seeded Cougars improved to 35-10 and clinched a berth in a NAIA regional tournament.

Rich Montanez had a two-run double, and Marcus Meraz added a RBI single in Cal State San Marcos' three-run third inning.

Dylan Edmiston hit a solo home run, and Randy Frederick had a RBI double for the second-seeded Generals, who ended the season at 38-20.

LSU-Alexandria moved into the championship game with an 11-2 win over Fisher College on Friday morning.

James Sloan had two hits and three RBIs, and Corey Thomasand Hunter Wallace combined to pitch a five-hitter for the Generals.

Yuliano Rodriguez had a RBI double for the Falcons (35-18), who eliminated UHV on Thursday night.
