Midday Mafia: Mafia members hang their hats at Dairy Treet
May 15, 2013 at 12:15 a.m.
Editor's note: The Midday Mafia is made up of five locals who wish to remain anonymous at the moment. Names have been changed to protect the guilty and are as follows: The Don, Two Taps, Walnuts, Jack the Knife and Jimmy Three Cheese. The Midday Mafia will run every other Thursday in Get Out.
The rotation came around, and it was Jack the Knife's day to pick where the boys dined. If you follow us here, even casually, you know that can only mean one thing: burgers.
Jack has exceptional taste in all things constructed of ground beef. His decision to dine at Dairy Treet satisfied the boys. Out of respect for Jack, we all had a burger. Jimmy had triple cheese on his double meat example and was quite pleased. I had a double-double and added jalapenos, while Walnuts cut the cheese. (On his burger, folks, come on!)
Two Taps tried to order a veggie burger, and we thought the lady taking his order was going to reach through the window and grab his throat. He settled for a single meat jewel loaded with veggies and appeared content. He got really quiet and didn't notice the drips on his shirt. He was fresh off a workout, so it didn't matter.
Whether you order crinkle fries, tater tots or onion rings, you will not be disappointed as all are excellent. Mr. Tolbert used to batter them by hand when we were kids, and they still taste the same.
The "treets" at Dairy Treet are the amazing milk shakes, malts, ice creams and sherbets. I am a huge fan of the raspberry sherbet and always look for the Flavor of the Day when I drive by. They have removable signs in the window to show what fresh offerings they have that day.
I always study the Texas Restaurant Association member stickers on the window when I order. They go back to the 60s and remind me of when I was a boy standing in the same spot. Dairy Treet is a moment frozen in time. Fortunately, they got it right the first time.
If you are near the corner of Laurent Street and Crestwood Drive, give Dairy Treet a try. Order a cheeseburger, tots and a shake and tell 'em the Midday Mafia sent you. You will be pleased and so will we. Until next time, Fuhget about it.
