A&M-Kingsville opens regional tournament with win

KINGSVILLE - Flatonia graduate Dallas Ponder picked up his 10th win of the season as Texas A&M-Kingsville knocked off Colorado State-Pueblo 6-3 Thursday on the opening day of the NCAA South Central Regional at Nolan Ryan Field.

The Javelinas earned their first regional win in seven tries.

In other games, St. Edward's edged Angelo State 5-4, and Colorado Mesa beat St. Mary's 6-2.

A&M-Kingsville moved to 40-16, marking the program's first 40-win season.

Ponder worked six innings, yielding three earned runs on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

Memorial graduate Jeremy Flores pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his 14th save of the season.

A&M-Kingsville will play Angelo State on Friday at 3 p.m.

St. Mary's will face Colorado State-Pueblo at 11 a.m.. St. Mary's and St. Edward's play at 7 p.m.
