Here is your guide to Memorial Day events in the Crossroads

Calhoun County

Port Lavaca - The Chamber of Commerce and seafood market Beacon 44 will host a free fishing tournament for kids from 3 to 12 years old from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at King Fisher Beach.

Registration will start at 8:30 a.m.

Beacon 44 will provide the bait, but kids must bring their own fishing gear. Trophies will be awarded for the biggest fish, the smallest fish and the most fish.

Port O'Connor - The Port O'Connor Sports Association will host a barbecue cook-off featuring brisket, chicken, ribs, chili, gumbo, pulled pork and dessert cooked on a grill Saturday at King Fisher Beach.

Entry fee is $25 for the first meat entry and $10 for any additional meat entries. Trophies will be awarded, and the proceeds from the event will go toward building a new sports complex.

The organization will sell brisket plates and chips for $7 and drinks for $1 starting at 11 a.m.

Port Lavaca - The Port Lavaca American Legion Post 167, the Port Lavaca VFW and the Port Lavaca GI Forum will host a Memorial Day ceremony from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Bayfront Peninsula Park. The names of 47 Calhoun County veterans killed in World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War will be read aloud, and a bell will sound. Devan Sanchez, a Calhoun High School junior, will sing the "Star Spangled Banner" and "America, the Beautiful." Boy Scout Troop 361 will sing the Native American "Ponca Flag Song." Port Lavaca City Manager Bob Turner is the guest speaker. Plans for a six-point, 60-foot wide concrete star with pavers, which will represent the Air Force, the Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard and the merchant marine, will also be unveiled. The group hopes to have the star complete by late May 2014. The event is free and open to the public. Concessions will be served for a price afterward. DeWitt County

Cuero - American Legion Post 3 is sponsoring a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday at the DeWitt County courthouse veterans memorial. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3972 is co-hosting the event. Members of the ladies auxiliaries of both organizations along with Pilot Club members will place a wreath at the monument. Guest speaker will be John Schendel, adjutant, American Legion, 14th District. Former county judge Ben Prause will play taps.

Yorktown - The Vietnam Veterans of America Yorktown Chapter 1029 is hosting a Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Vietnam veterans memorial on state Highway 72. Guest speaker will be helicopter pilot U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 (Ret.) Larry Castagneto.

Goliad County

Jackson County

Ganado - American Legion Post 346 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 8 a.m. Monday at the American Legion Hall. A breakfast will be served immediately after the service.

Lavaca County

Hallettsville - The Vietnam Veterans Association, Chapter 854, is hosting a Memorial Day program at 8:15 a.m. Monday on the courthouse square. Miss Hallettsville Kristen Henke of Sacred Heart School will read the names on the Veterans War Monument; area students from the county will be the guest speakers. Pastries and drinks will be available.

Hallettsville - American Legion Post 230 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6382 will host a Memorial Day program Monday at the Legion Hall, 107 E. Park St. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. The program, which begins at 11 a.m., will include guest speaker Dustin Owens, a combat veteran who is also the youth minister at the First Baptist Church of Hallettsville. The program will also include presentation of the colors, a wreath placement, a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.

Shiner - The Shiner Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. Monday at Green-Dickson Park. Guest speaker will be Purple Heart recipient Claudio Elias, a former combat medic who is now a Shiner police officer. The service will also include a wreath presentation, flag posting and flag folding ceremony along with patriotic music.

Yoakum - The city of Yoakum will host a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday at the Yoakum Fire/EMS Station, 203 Nelson St. Shiner Police Chief Ronnie Leck will be the guest speaker. Leck is a former U.S. Marine and former Lavaca County judge. Area Boy Scouts will post the colors, and there will be a tribute to veterans.
