Congratulations to everyone who won awards

It is truly an exciting time to be in the Victoria Independent School District. We have experienced many magical moments with many more to come. As we reflect on this year's accomplishments, it is clearly evident that we are surrounded by exceptional students, outstanding employees, supportive parents, a visionary Board of Trustees and a community that truly values the importance of education and career opportunities for all of our students.

A wonderful example of our student success can be found in the Victoria East High School valedictorian Melissa Clark. Melissa is a finalist in the 2013 competition for the National Merit Scholarship Program. She is one of approximately 1.5 million students across the nation who entered the National Merit Scholarship Program and is now one only 8,300 students to be named as a finalist. During her high school career, Melissa was a multiyear recipient of the Board of Trustees Excellence Award, earned recognition as an AP Scholar with Distinction, was named a NASA High School Aerospace Scholar, was a UHV Robotics Research Intern and conducted multiple research projects with prestigious centers. Melissa has also received the Corporate Sponsored Merit Scholarship from The Dow Chemical Company Foundation and will attend Stanford University this fall, majoring in biochemistry.

Another example of excellence can be found in the VISD Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program. They have recently earned a Distinguished Unit Award with Merit. This recognizes our AFJROTC program as one of the best in the world. This award is given to the top 7 percent of AFJROTC units worldwide. In Texas, we were one of only 13 units to achieve this recognition. We would also like to extend our congratulations to Lt. Col. Roy Gonzalez and Master Sgt. John Miller on their selection as outstanding instructors for the 2012-13 school year. Out of almost 1,900 instructors across the nation, only 112 were honored, and we are proud to say that two of them came from the Victoria ISD.

As we move forward in our quest for excellence, we must continue to cultivate a culture where every teacher is a leader and every student a success. Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us." On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire VISD, thank you for your choice to serve as a champion for our children and for making the impossible possible.
