Victoria police officers arrested a Houston man Sunday afternoon for running naked and screaming "nonsense" at Victoria Mall.

Police Sgt. Jay Strauss said Rene Esparza, 40, was arrested about 2:15 p.m. for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and transport.

Esparza was apparently lodging at the La Quinta hotel across the street from the mall located in the 7000 block of North Navarro Street and ran across the street, entering the mall near Best Buy.

Strauss said Esparza was spotted "ranting and raving" in the mall shortly after throwing his wallet, phone and money out of his blue jeans' pockets. He then removed his clothes and began running in the nude.

Strauss said mall shoppers tackled Esparza to the ground and kept him contained until five police officers arrived. Esparza suffered minor scrapes, and no other injuries were reported.

A blanket was draped over Esparza soon after he was cuffed, Strauss said.

Strauss said Esparza was thought to be under the influence of drugs and was taken by police vehicle to Citizens Medical Center for a medical examination before he is jailed.

"We want to make sure he's medically clear and not going to overdose on anything before we take him to jail," Strauss said.
