Hopes were high for 14-year-old Port Lavaca resident Colton Blinka, who traveled to Washington, D.C., Sunday to compete in 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

"Colton's spelling bee journey is over," his mother, Deann Blinka, wrote in a Facebook post. "He didn't make the top 50, but what an experience."

Colton survived the second preliminary round with the word, "erudite," which means having or showing great knowledge.

The Travis Middle School eighth-grader advanced beyond the second round Wednesday afternoon but was eliminated in the third round because he did not score high enough on his vocabulary test, a new addition to the competition this year

Colton and his family will remain in Washington, D.C., through Sunday and watch the rest of the competition live until the winner is named Thursday evening.
