Residents living in the unincorporated areas of Refugio County will not be paying a new sales tax - but voting machines may be to blame.

Refugio County Judge Rene Mascorro said several of the votes were from residents living in the incorporated cities, which would affect the results. He added that it is too early to know whether the final results would be challenged or if the proposition will be on a ballot in a future election.

"Whatever the outcome, we want to make sure we're spending every dollar to its best," he said.

Had the proposition passed, it would have imposed a 2 percent sales and use tax for the purpose of driving economic development to the unincorporated areas of the county.

Mascorro said voters may have had misinformation, and he wants to work at better educating the public about the proposition.
