A Taft man remained in critical condition Wednesday night after he was injured in a wreck that morning on U.S. Highway 59 near Fox Road.

Charles Cantwell, 61, was traveling north on the highway in a 2002 Saturn when he tried to avoid a tractor-trailer that was turning from the shoulder of the northbound lane into a crossover, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper Gerald Bryant.

"The truck had passed the crossover, pulled over on the shoulder and backed up before it tried turning into the crossover," Bryant said. "The driver of the Saturn tried to evade it but hit the trailer."

Oliver Parker, 52, of Houston, was driving the truck pulling a flat-bed trailer. Cantwell was taken by Victoria Fire Department Emergency Medical Services to DeTar Hospital Navarro, said Bryant.

The 6 a.m. crash is under investigation by DPS Trooper Jeannie Slovacek.
