If you ever signed that blank check, gave it to Uncle Sam and told him to fill it in for an amount up to and including your life, you are a veteran. Whether you served in battle or not, you were "on call" and willing to serve. That qualifies you as a veteran.

On Veterans Day, Warrior's Weekend would like to honor your service and sacrifice with a free lunch at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall on Lova Drive from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Spouses and widows of veterans are also welcome. We would encourage everyone to attend the parade downtown and then come to the VFW Hall for a great meal in your honor.

Although the mission of Warrior's Weekend is to enhance the lives of those who sacrificed in the Global War on Terror, this is our opportunity to reach out to veterans of all eras. This is our fourth year to serve this luncheon on Veterans Day, but it is only one thing we have done to reach out to all veterans.

Last October, we held what is believed to be the largest parade ever in Victoria in honor of our Vietnam veterans, "The Parade That Never Was." On Feb. 1, 2014, we will hold a parade in honor of our Korean War veterans in downtown Victoria, and we are calling it "We Remember" as the Korean War is widely known as "The Forgotten War."

This year, Warrior's Weekend brought 717 heroes from the Global War on Terror to South Texas, not to mention more than 300 family members and caretakers. More than 400 boat captains volunteered to take the heroes fishing in Port O'Connor. It is the least we can do for all of our heroes, and we intend to continue doing so as long as needed and as long as we continue to receive the tremendous support of our donors. Our largest fundraiser of the year is going to be April 5, and we are certain we will be sold out again. If you would like to reserve your table for eight at $500 each, call my office or email me at Also, don't forget to sponsor your flag for the Warrior's Weekend Field of Honor for $40 each. This year, we posted 2,800 flags in the field and may have to limit our number, so do so ASAP. Again, you can do so online at

Many of you have been asking how you might obtain the documentary of Warrior's Weekend called "Return to Honor" produced by Sharon Burns, and you may now do so. It is for sale on Amazon, or you may go to for more information. If all else fails, call my office at 361-572-0001, and we will help you.

Remember, veterans of all eras along with their spouses are encouraged to dine with us at the VFW Hall, 2001 Lova Drive, on Monday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Again, widows of veterans are also most welcome. We do not ask for proof that you are a veteran, and the meal is, of course, free. Enjoy a great meal and visit with fellow veterans from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan. Look for us in the Veterans Day parade and then come join us.
