A woman died Wednesday morning while working at the William G. McConnell Unit in Beeville.
Rashidat Subair, no age or city of residence available, collapsed while working in the central control area of the prison at 9:23 a.m., said Jason Clark, the director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's public information office.
Subair was working in the central control area, which stores keys and has video monitors, with another correctional officer. That officer called 911.
While being transported to Christus Spohn Hospital in Beeville, Subair stopped breathing, and medics began chest compressions, Clark said.
"Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased at 10:25 a.m.," he said.
Clark said it appears Subair had health concerns, but he would not elaborate. It was also unclear Wednesday afternoon whether an autopsy would be performed.
"It appears to be from natural causes, and foul play is not a factor," Clark said.
Subair normally works at the Ramsey Unit in Brazoria County, but she was working an overtime shift at the McConnell Unit.
Clark said exhaustion had nothing to do with her death.
Subair worked for the prison system for nearly five years.
