A three-vehicle wreck in the 2300 block of U.S. Highway 59 sent two drivers to Victoria hospitals Wednesday night.

Trooper Vern Sterry of the Department of Public Safety said a blue 2003 Mazda Protege was northbound on the highway, near Fox Road, when the driver crossed the grassy median into southbound traffic. The Protege struck a blue 2008 Mazda M3, which then spun out of control and was struck again by a gray 2009 Hyundai Sonata.

The Mazda M3 went off the highway and down a grassy embankment, Sterry said.

The driver, Aprille Paatan, 22, of Houston, was extracted from her vehicle with a hydraulic rescue tool and taken to Citizens Medical Center.

Paatan was being treated in the emergency room at Citizens Medical Center as of 7:50 p.m. Her condition was not available, according to a hospital supervisor.

The driver of the Protege, Jeremy Quada, 25, of Victoria, was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro and is in stable condition, according to a hospital supervisor. The driver and passenger of the Sonata, Cody Vangossen, 28, and Edith Vangossen, 26, both of Rosenberg, were uninjured.

The wreck caused traffic in the southbound lanes to back up past state Highway 185, and vehicles were diverted to the northbound side of the highway to pass.
