A 38-year-old Gonzales man was hospitalized with second-degree burns Tuesday morning after an explosion in a saltwater and oil tank at a Karnes County oil-field site.

Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva said the man, whose name was not released, was expected to be hospitalized only overnight at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

"I spoke to him by telephone just awhile ago, and he's going to be OK," the sheriff said Tuesday afternoon.

The explosion took place about 4:45 a.m. in the oil field off state Highway 80 north of Gillett.

Traffic was detoured from the explosion site until about 9 a.m., Villanueva said.

The site is owned by Gulf Coast Acquisitions.

Villanueva said the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Texas Railroad Commission were on site, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also expected to investigate the cause of the explosion.
