The nominations are in, and there can be not only one, but five winners.

The General Zaragoza Society of Goliad's second annual Zaragoza Educational and Community Awards Banquet on Nov. 2 will honor award recipients. The awards are given for law enforcement, community service and citizenship, education, humanitarianism and the highest award, the president award.

The society received nominations of various people and organizations. Society President Edward Garcia hopes for another full house for the awards presentations.

"The first year went great," he said. "We had over 350 people last year."

Each award had its own criteria and was judged by a panel of independent judges. Winners receive a General Zaragoza Medallion.

Hernan Jaso, a member of the society, said the banquet is something for the entire community to be proud of.

"It's through the hard work of our forefathers who have laid the foundations that we have come to not only recognize those achievements, but we want to recognize the people behind those achievements," Jaso said.

This year's winners will be notified closer to the banquet.
