YMCA's Corporate Cup sees rise in competition

Office workers apparently really want to see each other sweat, based on the big increase in the YMCA's Corporate Cup competition.

The YMCA of the Golden Crescent's Corporate Cup, now in its 27th year, brings the community together, said Madi Gregory, the association's membership and marketing director.

Opening ceremonies are at 5:15 p.m. Monday in the YMCA gym, 1806 N. Nimitz St., where a high school band or color guard is expected to perform.

"This is just a really fun event," Gregory said. "It's teamwork outside of the office."

This year's competition features 22 teams. Last year, six teams signed up. Gregory attributes the growth to an increase in advertising.

"This year, we've also seen an onslaught of people who've been involved in CrossFit; so that kind of competitive fitness, especially in this area, has grown," she said.

New events this year are the bunny hop, a potato-sack race and a three-legged race. YMCA did away with its bike race at Riverside Park because it was usually rained out, Gregory said.

"Our most popular events are usually the 6-mile relay and volleyball. ... It's already getting heated on the volleyball court, and that is just practice, so it will be interesting," she said.

Companies were split into three divisions based on the number of employees they have. Silver, 31/2-foot trophies will be handed out to the top six teams in each division.

The Corporate Cup ends Sept. 21.

Registration for next year's competition must be made by Aug. 18.

Proceeds from the sign-up fees go toward YMCA's Friends of Youth Campaign, which is designed to help those with low socioeconomic status have access to a gym and child care, Gregory said.
