JOE MACHACEK   ALLISON MILES for The Victoria Advocate

• Name: Joe Machacek

• Age: 65

• City of residence: Shiner

• Current title: Deacon and business manager with Shiner's Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church

• First job: My first work with the church came when I was about 50. When I was a kid, I lived in the country, and even though I wanted to be an altar server, there was no way for me to do it. One day, I came to church and saw it could use a server. I finally got up the nerve to ask about doing it myself. An old guy like me.

What it taught me: I learned the importance of paying attention. I never had a lesson when it came to being an altar server. Everything I knew came from watching the priest through the years.
